YAS Marina circuit is the second Formula One track in the Middle East, after Bahrain

Its construction cost an estimated $1.3 billion

It is the largest permanent sports venue lighting project in the world


Top Formula One race drivers are competing in UAE capital of Abu Dhabi to win the sport’s championship title.


They are racing on the YAS Marina Circuit, which is unique in design and structure.


Here are 11 things you need to know about YAS Marina Circuit:

First Grand Prix – The circuit took two years to build and was launched in 2009. It hosted its first Grand prix in the same year.

Second in the region – The circuit in YAS Island is the second Formula One track in the Middle East region. The first is in Bahrain.

Cost – Construction cost of the YAS Marina circuit is estimated at $1.3 billion. Construction was carried out through Aldar Properties, who reached out to several sub-contractors to execute the mega project.

Design – It was designed by architect Hermann Tilke. It has 21 corners and passes by the marina and YAS Viceroy Abu Dhabi Hotel.

Number of laps – Drivers take 55 laps around the circuit before finishing the race.

Length – The YAS Marina Circuit is 5.554 kilometres long.

Race distance – Participants drive a total of 305.355km to finish the race.

Surface – The surface of the track is made graywake aggregate, shipped to Abu Dhabi from England. The material is highly acclaimed by Formula One experts and drivers for the strong grip it offers.

Grand stands Formula One enthusiasts can observe the race from five grandstand areas: Main Grandstand, West Grandstand, North Grandstand, South Grandstand and Marina Grandstand.

Permanent lights – YAS Marina circuit is the largest permanent sports venue lighting project in the world.

Main events – Besides hosting the Formula One Grand Prix, YAS Marina Circuit also hosted the opening event for the Australian V8 Supercars series, the FIA GTI World Championship and the GP2 Asia Series, among others.
