Buildings in Saudi Arabia good for up to 50 years: SCE

February 3, 2014 8:03 am

The Saudi Council of Engineers (SCE) has said the average life span of buildings in the country is between 25 and 50 years, compared with 100 years in other countries, Arab News has reported. Factors contributing to short life span include poor design and implementation, absence of regular maintenance work, and low level of building materials and usage, said Talal Samarkandi, head of Jeddah branch of the SCE and board member of Al-Umran Saudi Association. He urged the municipality of Jeddah to form a committee entrusted with the task of inspecting the dilapidated, vacant buildings in old neighbourhoods, as these may fall down and injure passers-by.
