Empower participates in Earth Hour with employee pledges
Empower, the world’s largest district cooling services provider, participated in this year’s Earth Hour observations, encouraging its employees to turn off all non- essential lights and signing a pledge.
“Protecting the natural environment against the ongoing challenges of climate change is a key component of the UAE’s Vision 2021,” said H.E Ahmad Bin Shafar, Chief Executive Officer, Empower. “As a business that exists within a larger community, we have a shared responsibility in safeguarding our ecosystems for the children of tomorrow. And as scientific research links man- made carbon dioxide emissions with global warming, worldwide initiatives like Earth Hour are a reminder for everyone to act responsibly.”
Earth Hour is a worldwide event organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and is held on the last Saturday of March. Since its inception in 2007, millions of households and businesses have turned off their non-essential lights for one hour every year, to raise awareness about the need to take action against climate change. This year’s event took place between 8:30pm- 9:30pm (UAE Time) on March 28.
As part of its Earth Hour activities, many of Empower employees also participated in the DEWA’s Earth Hour event in Bay Avenue Park, Business Bay from 5- 10pm on the same day. A short-distance cycling parade was also organised for the company’s staff to mark the day, in the Bay Avenue area.
Additionally, Empower’s systems use up to 50 per cent less energy as traditional cooling systems. Last year, the company’s network saved 836 MW in power plant capacity, while serving 50,000 customers with district cooling.
“Consistent behavioural change, be it by minimising your individual carbon footprint, or developing businesses that are environmentally sustainable, will be the key to mitigating the challenges of climate change,” continued Bin Shafar. “At Empower, we are committed to optimising the use of electricity on a company and a personal level.”
Empower currently operates more than 1 Million RT and provides environmentally responsible district cooling services to large-scale real estate developments such as Jumeirah Group, Business Bay, Jumeirah Beach Residences, Dubai International Financial Centre, Palm Jumeirah, Jumeirah Lake Towers, Ibn Batutta Shopping Mall, Discovery Gardens, Dubai Healthcare City, Dubai World trade Centre Residences, Dubai Design District, among others.
