The first ‘Qatar Design Awards’ now open for entries

The best interior design and architecture projects as well as design and interior professionals in Qatarwill have a chance to gain official recognition and pick up industry accolades with the launch of the ‘Qatar Design Awards’. Details of the competition – in its first ever edition – have been announced today bythe organisers of Interiors Qatar (IQ). IQ, a new exhibition set to take place in Doha from 2-4 February 2015,will bring the latest and most innovative products and solutions for commercial,residential, hospitality and public sector interiors to Qatar.

The launch of the Qatar Design Awards plus the establishment of the IQ exhibition reflect the increased demand for interior design solutions in Qatar as multiple projects are near completion. Qatar has more than US$220bn worth of projects in the pipeline for the next years positively impacting the interiors and fit our market across all sectors and particularly for products including internal wood work, soft and hard furnishing, lighting, flooring and bathroom fittings. The Qatar interiors and fit out market has an estimated value of US$0.81bnas of April 2014 with a value expected to double to US$1.61bn by the end of the year. The Qatar Design Awards are being launched to highlight Qatar’s interiors stars and innovators, and to draw attention to the emerging talents working in this promising industry.

Open to interior designers, developers, operators and architects, the Qatar Design Awards will reward both projects and individuals located within Qatar; projects eligible for entry can be either completed or under-construction. Winners will be announced during a gala dinner in Doha on the evening of the 1stFebruary 2015.

From hotels and restaurants to apartments, offices and hospitals, the Qatar Design Awards are open for entries across 12 wide-reaching categories: Corporate Facility; Cultural, Institutional or Educational Facility; Healthcare Facility; Hotel or Resort; Residential Unit; Restaurant or Food and Beverage Outlet; Spa or Recreational Facility; Art Installation; Sustainable Initiative and Landscape.

In addition to those categories, the Awards will also recognise the excellence of individuals with the title ‘Best Interior Designer’, ‘Best Architect’, ‘Best Young Architect’ and ‘Best Young Designer’. Winners from both project and individual categories will be selected by a judging panel of regional and international experts.

Mohamed Cherif Amor, chair of the department of interior design at Virginia Commonwealth University Qatar and member of the judging panel, said: “It has been an honor for me to have been invited to be part of the judging panel of the first Qatar Design Awards. This role comes at a juncture when the State of Qatar is enjoying a period of unparalleled growth and prosperity, with exceptional state-of-the-art architectural and design developments.

This proffers on the competition judges great responsibilities; we want to ensure we showcase the very best of the best. We will take into consideration different criteria to make our final decision but given the amazing interiors, architecture and outstanding quality of design work and finish on multiple projects across the country, we expect a very tough competition, and all of us judges are setting our standards very high.”

Appropriateness and context, aesthetic and presentation, creativity and innovation, sustainability, adaptability, corporate social responsibility, project vision and innovation are the key elements that the judges will be looking at when selecting the winners.

Participants have until 26th October 2014 to register their participation in the awards will take place between 9 -13 November 2014 with shortlisted projects announced on 7 December 2014 and winners on 1st February 2015, , the night before the opening of IQ Exhibition, at the W Hotel, Doha.

IQ will attract interior designers, architects and design industry professionals from both Qatar and the surrounding Gulf states. IQ will take place from 2-4 February 2015 covering15,000m2 of the state-of-the-art and environmentally-friendly Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) showcasing products, services and technologies for the design, architecture, hospitality and retail industries, fittings and materials.
