New Zealand’s international business development agency, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) has appointed Haylon Smith as Trade Commissioner for the Middle East, Africa and Pakistan. Based in Dubai, Haylon is also the Deputy Consul-General for Dubai and Northern Emirates.

“I am honoured to be appointed as the NZ Trade Commissioner to the UAE,” said Mr Smith. “The GCC is an important trading partner for New Zealand, with huge potential for our businesses with current two way trade at US$4.6b”

Of particular interest to Mr Smith is the opportunity within food and agriculture. “New Zealand exports around ninety per cent of its agricultural production. The produce is high-quality, healthy and halal which makes it a perfect fit for the GCC market,” says Mr Smith.

“NZ companies are becoming increasingly active in the region and offering products that appeal to consumers in the GCC, especially Dubai. I am looking forward to working with New Zealand companies as they continue to export high quality produce into the UAE,” says Mr Smith.

Haylon Smith has been responsible for NZTE’s global agribusiness programme where he worked with organisations and companies to support agribusiness exports into China, Russia, the United States, South America and Saudi Arabia. He has a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s Degree in Bioscience Enterprise (Hons) from the University of Auckland.
