Stay positively charged, unclutter your life, and amp up your chances of staying connected with a new era of innovative “BOOST↑UP™” wireless charging dock for iPhone and Apple watch, designed and engineered specifically to charge both at fastest possible speeds.

Belkin®, a market leader in mobile accessories also offers a USB – A port for a third device, to power three devices from a single AC socket which can be ideal for office/desk use as well by holding iPhone and Apple Watch at Optimal viewing angles and can charge a third device from the same socket, ideal for a busy office environment.

The new product is compatible for iPhone Xs Max, iPhone Xs, iPhone XR, iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, Apple Watch Series 1,2,3 and 4, and devices that charge via USB – A.

“We designed and engineered the new BOOST↑UP Wireless Charging Dock from the ground up to be the most elegant and most powerful home for your iPhone and Apple Watch,” said Oliver Seil, vice president of design, Belkin.

“On the inside, we packed our latest intelligent wireless charging systems. It’s a great example of how the Belkin design teams think of technology as an extension to our lifestyle that should enhance our environment as much as it makes life with our mobile devices more enjoyable.”

In an interview with Norbert von Boode, Senior Product Manager, Belkin, AMEinfo sheds more light on this technology and its future entry in the GCC market.

AME: Why Apple (iOS) and not Android?

Norbert von Boode: When we look at products, we try to identify the needs or unmet needs of the consumers. For us the BOOST↑UP™ for iPhone or watch was the logical evolution for existing products. Belkin understood that Apple users had the need to charge the phone, Apple Watch and a 3rd device. That’s how we came up with this product. We wanted to complement the Apple experience by adding wireless charging in there for iPhone and watch plus an extra USB e-port, to charge a 3rd device. Our company is continuously researching ways to add to the experience of users for all devices.

AME: How fast is this wireless charging?

Norbert von Boode: The iPhone charges at 7.5 watts. Typically, from 0-100% it requires 3 to 3.5 hours, depending on environment, temperature, and conditions of the phone.  That’s a typical benchmark. The amount of wireless power input is regulated by the phone itself. The iPhone allows 7.5 watts. A 5-watt Magnetic Charging Module powers the Apple Watch.

AME: But these are stationary charging solutions? What happens for people on the go?

Norbert von Boode: Our mission is to increase the experience at home, in the office or on the go. The BOOST↑UP™ solutions, in particular, are not designed for mobility nor are we marketing them as something you can take it with you to different locations. These are suitable for centralized locations only.

Wireless charging has been big for us. But for people on the move, who need to quickly recharge their phones or batteries, we expect the industry to adopt “fast charging” (via cable).

We understand the consumer sometimes prefers the convenience of wireless charging, but on those occasions when and where you have to leave your house or work in 30 min and you forgot to charge wirelessly, fast wired charging becomes the product to market, with a higher watt solution. With up to 18 watts in power, you can charge from 0-50 in 30 min.

AME: Is Battery technology improving to reduce the need to recharge so often?

Norbert von Boode: The batteries are based on lithium polymer or Sodium Nickel Chloride and they need to be designed to be portable, especially on a plane. That’s how capacity on the tech side is treated for batteries. Belkin is making strides to introduce other technologies that are either faster in charging the phone or the battery itself. It might seem that many of the batteries look the same. It’s not true because it’s what’s on the inside that counts. We need to enhance the experience of batteries for users.

AME: When will these products make their regional entry?

Smartphones, and especially Apple, are making enormous technology revolution in the world and specifically in the UAE which is one of the leading and trending technology destinations in the region. We have seen a real understanding of personalisation from some retailers in the Middle East and globally. We do have two colour options: White and black, popular colours which match iPhone and watch colours. We are planning a US and European launch at first but will head to the GCC region soon after. The UAE market is at the forefront if you think about how users consume products, how they consume media and the kind of products they buy. They wouldn’t just buy products without researching them first. We have other markets that are extremely important to us like Saudi and Kuwait, for instance. However, if you think about a showcase market for our brand that works to our premium positioning, then the UAE would be it. For Belkin products within the EMEA region, the Middle East is in top five from a revenue respective, with the UAE contributing 50% on its own.

AME: How will it be priced?

In the US, there are 2 versions: A special edition $179 and a standard one for $159. The performance is the same but the special edition has design enhancements where we add chrome elements.

The BOOST↑UP™ Wireless Charging Dock for iPhone + Apple Watch + USB-A port model named F8J235 will be priced at AED599.

AME: How hot is the wireless charging market?

Wireless charging has been around for years, and it experienced fast adoption since the iPhone 8 launched with wireless charging compatibility. Belkin’s first wireless charging pad launched over 3 years ago. There is a competition explosion in the market. The accessories market is growing at a strong pace. According to Future Market Insights, the global mobile phone accessories market is expected to reach $121.72 billion (AED446.7 bn) by 2025 due to strong demand for protective covers and power banks.
