Exclusive: David Gandy for Light Blue 2015

On the sidelines of Dolce & Gabbana’s Light Blue 2015 launch, Aficionado catches up with English model David Gandy.

How would you describe Light Blue?
Light Blue is about reminding you of great summer days and offering an escape from the day-to-day. It makes you feel invigorated but also relaxed at the same time, so I think the man who wears the fragrance is very confident, with lots of energy.

How do you choose your signature scent?
The idea of a signature scent is quite personal, as your fragrance can be one of the first things people notice about you. I like Light Blue because it’s really fresh and crisp and it’s inspired by the Mediterranean, so it’s one of the fragrances I wear a lot, especially in the summer.

What do you expect from fragrances?
This varies depending on my mood. In the summer, I would veer towards a crisp and citrusy scent, whereas in the winter, at night or for a special occasion, I would go for something richer, like the Vetiver fragrance from the Dolce & Gabbana Velvet Collection.

What do you like the most about the Dolce & Gabbana look?
I think it’s constantly evolving, yet always stays true to the brand’s Sicilian heritage. The Dolce & Gabbana look is always very elegant and passionate.

How did you decide to become a model?
I started at the age of 21, when I won a modelling competition on a British television channel and signed a modelling contract with Select Model Management. Then came the Light Blue campaign and with it, overnight, I became a globally recognised model.

How would you describe your style?
My main source of style inspiration is bygone eras, as I like that ‘English gentleman’ look. I’m a bit more relaxed in the summer and I’ll wear a lot more colour. Structured trousers paired with a blazer and a pair of smart leather brogues is a great summer look.

We talk a lot about brand ambassadors and the products they represent but what is it like to work with a brand like Dolce & Gabbana on a daily basis during campaigns? Is it hectic?
It’s more exciting than hectic. I owe so much of my success to Dolce & Gabbana, being the campaign face for Light Blue fragrances. This accelerated my career. I would probably not be here without them and I am thankful for that.

How would you define the Middle East in three words? Do you plan to come to the region in the near future?
Unknown yet interesting and probably very hot! I don’t have any immediate plans, but I wouldn’t rule it out.

What’s been the happiest moment in your life so far?
There is no particular one, but there have been many so far and I hope there are lots more to come.
