Here is what you need to know about Mohamed Alabbar.

Building a name in property

Alabbar made his name serving as the chairman of Emaar Properties since 1997. Emaar is the builder of the world’s tallest tower Burj Khalifa and the owner and operator of the world’s largest shopping mall, The Dubai Mall. Both structures are in Dubai.


E-commerce efforts

Alabbar’s recently announced Middle East e-commerce platform is not his first investment in e-commerce. He has made several efforts earlier to support the industry. This included buying a stake in Italian online retailer Yoox Net-A-Porter (YNAP), Dubai-listed logistics firm Aramex and Kuwait Food Co (Americana).

Government roles

Mohamed Alabbar served as the director-general of the Dubai Department of Economic Development, for a period of time.

He is also among the top economic advisers to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Alabbar also serves as a member of Dubai Executive Council and the Dubai Economic Council.
