The public health and safety department at Dubai Municipality in collaboration with Dubai Police, Civil Defence and Dubai Ambulance Service, has conducted an evacuation mock drill at the Dubai Municipality Clinic in Deira near Union metro station.

The move was aimed at educating employees and visitors of the clinic on how to deal with fire situations in the medical service building.

Eng. Marwan Al Mohamed, director of public health and safety department said the municipality is keen to ensure the safety of its employees, customers and residents of the emirate of Dubai in different unforeseen situations. This drive is a part of its various types of experiments in different locations and premises.

The mock drill also aims to improve and ensure the readiness of all concerned parties and reduce injuries and fatalities in such cases as well as to identify any future or developmental needs and to identify the strengths and weaknesses through an assessment process of evacuation drill solving all shortcomings for the parties involved to be ready if any similar incident happens.

Eng. Sultan Al Suwaidi, head of public safety section said the experiment was completed successfully, referring to the 11 minutes during which the evacuation of all employees and visitors and their return to the normal situation was done successfully.

’91 employees and around 80 visitors were evacuated from the different sections of the clinic within this time. There was no injuries despite some complexities faced by the team,’ Al Suwaidi said.

‘Considering the number of people evacuated and the time consumed, the drill was a remarkable achievement, it took us only in 11 minutes to clear the entire building,’ he said.

‘Many procedures have been seriously undertaken by DM during such evacuation process, such as creating a highly qualified emergency team to take appropriate actions, create and build an emergency system with an official plan for each department involved, and spread awareness on how to deal with such circumstances among all employees,’ he explained.

‘The emergency team will be responsible on creating evacuation drills in different cases of fire or weather incident or any physical or environmental damage. The team will also take the role of improving and supporting the emergency system of departments at municipality.

‘The team will also create a full media plan for both internal and external parties concerned in such cases. The media plan will focus on dealing with any emergency case in a very professional way, starting from announcing of the case to the employees or the public, dealing with any serious case and contacting different media establishments to get media support,’ he added.

He also thanked all those who involved in the successful implementation of the process and stressed the need to strengthen the spirit of cooperation with the concerned authorities to ensure the safety of the community in the emirate.
