Enormous response for Dubai International Award for Best Practices

The Partnership Department of Dubai Municipality announced that the deadline of submitting application for the 10th edition of Dubai International Award for Best Practices has been extended to 1 June 2014 from 1 March 2014 which was announced earlier. The final deadline for amendments on submitted applications will be 31 July 2014.

Eng. Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality said that the civic body has extended the previously announced deadlines based on the overwhelming responses and number requests from all over the world to allow some more time to submit applications.

‘The great response and hundreds of applications received so far show the wide acceptance of the award organized Dubai Municipality in collaboration with UN-HABITAT under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and Industry and Chairman of Dubai Municipality,’ Lootah said.

‘DM also updated the website of DIABP : www.dubaiaward.ae after adding new categories for participation, facility to register online and all about the award. This year civic body has launched a global media campaign to attract maximum number of nominations for the 10th edition of DIABP aiming at creating awareness and introducing the award and its goals,’ said Ismail Al Banna, Director of Partnership Department.

‘The response we get from social and online media is amazing. The interest of new generation in social media made our job so simple and easy. Similarly, now it is very easy to anyone who wishes to submit or communicate with Award committee through any of these channels,’ he said.

‘The Award aims to recognize best practices that contributes to improving the living environment. The nominated practices should have a demonstrable and tangible impact on improving people’s quality of life; should be the result of effective partnerships between the public, private and civic sectors of society and should be socially, culturally, economically and environmentally sustainable,’ he further said.

‘All types of Authorities, organizations, and establishments can submit the nominations to Dubai Municipality or UN-HABITAT center or any of 30 award partners all over the world. In addition they can email directly to the committee via dubaiaward@dm.gov.ae,’ he explained.

The DIABP was established in 1995 under the directive of late Sheikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, during the United Nations International Conference that convened in Dubai between 19 – 22 November. 914 participants from 95 countries met to recognize best practices with positive impact on improving the living environment. H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the U.A.E. and the Ruler of Dubai and H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and Industry and Chairman of Dubai Municipality have continued to support this Award.

The Award reflects the policy and commitment of Dubai Government and the United Arab Emirates towards sustainable development of human settlements and protection of the environment on the basis of mutual international cooperation.

Selected best practices will be promoted and used by the United Nations and the international community as a means of Improving public policy based on what works; Raising awareness of decision-makers at all levels and of the public of potential solutions to common social, economic and environmental problems and Sharing and transferring knowledge, expertise and experience through networking and peer-to-peer learning.
