In a move to support cancer survivors and those living with cancer, the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has collaborated with American Women’s Association of Qatar to launch the ‘Heart Pillow Project’.

The Heart Pillow Project has been established to help breast cancer patients and ease some of their symptoms. As part of the project, patients were given gift bags post-surgery containing a heart shaped pillow along with an assortment of other items such as shampoos, shower gels, body lotions, dental kits etc. to uplift their spirits and spread happiness.

The heart shape of the pillow is designed so that it fits perfectly under the patient’s arm. It aims to calm symptoms and makes patients more comfortable after their surgery. It can help to reduce tension and swelling under the arm. The heart pillow also works to reduce pain from shoulder tension and can be placed under a seat belt to prevent accidental bumps and pressure.

Advanced Clinical Nurse Specialist for the breast unit at HMC Cathy McKirdy said: “We not only cater to a patient’s medical needs but also support them emotionally and psychologically. One of my long term patients came in a few weeks after surgery and said that the pillow had helped her immensely and it had been instrumental in helping her to sleep comfortably. Such feedback is very encouraging and motivating. It is the reason why we at HMC are always looking for new ways to help our patients, not only to get better but to feel comfortable throughout their journey.”

Coordinator for the Heart Pillow Project from the American Women’s Association of Qatar Barbara Phillips said: “The Heart Pillow was originally developed in the United States and has since spread to many countries around the world. Our project’s goal is to offer both physical and emotional comfort to women with breast cancer in Doha.”

“In addition to the heart pillows, we have also specially designed adjustable totes used to support and adjust the position of the drains that patients must wear for several weeks after surgery. The tote bag, designed and sewn to the specifications of the clinical nurse specialists at HMC, allows the patient to move about freely without fear of dislodging the drains as they resume daily activities. It is also attractive to look at and makes the patient feel better as well,” she mentioned.

“The heart pillows and drain tote bags are all hand crafted by over 25 dedicated volunteers who have worked long and hard to provide enough supplies to last through to the autumn of this year and we hope to continue into the future. It’s truly a labor of love. I’m very proud to be associated with these women and the Heart Pillow Project”, she added.
