June 7, 2014 10:15 am

The hugely popular INNOVATOR programme, a strategic initiative by the Abu Dhabi Technology Development Committee (TDC), once again delighted DIYers (Do-It-Yourself) when it kicked off its Summer Series on Saturday at the Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi. Attended by more than 30 DIYers, craftsmen and budding scientists, the event heralds the start of an exciting summer of workshops and competitions designed to inspire DIY enthusiasts and experienced innovators based in the UAE, to ignite a spark of creativity and turn their ideas into reality.

Commenting on the launch of the INNOVATOR Summer Series, Majid Al Mail, Senior Manager at Abu Dhabi Technology Development Committee (TDC) heading the INNOVATOR initiative, said: “Our INNOVATOR summer series builds on the success of the INNOVATOR edition that took place earlier this year, and aims to support UAE-based talented individuals and DIYers who thrive on science and technology”. The Summer Series allows them to hone their skills and learn new ones, connect with like-minded people to inspire one another, share knowledge and pick up tips from experts in their field. Ultimately, by providing our Do-It-Yourself (DIY) community with the right tools and support to bring their ideas to life, whether a model aircraft, robot or computer programme, we offer an opportunity for everyone to experience grass roots creativity”.

The INNOVATOR Summer Series will feature six workshops from May 31 to August 30. Packed with technology and science tips and insights, the five month programme began on Saturday with the Aero Modelling Workshop which demonstrated various methods of designing and building a radio-controlled airplane. Upcoming workshops include:
• 3D Printing. June 14 and August 30, focusing on how to design and print using a 3D printing technology and ThinkerCad software, the workshop will also showcase facts about 3D designs, modelling & printing and laser cutting ;” Art to Part concept”.
• Robotics, July 19 and August 16, which will teach attendees how to build and program robots using VEX Robotics plus an opportunity to enter their robots in a fun obstacle course. “Students take part in robotics competition based on design and programing concept”.
• Raspberry Pi Programming, August 2, which will present Raspberry Pi computer “coding” and programming techniques.

Participants for INNOVATOR Summer Series can be individuals, special interest groups, academic institutions or hobbyists that tinker, create, invent, build, design or develop, with a “can do” attitude driving them.

Shaikah Mohamed Al Romathi – Airframe and Aero Engines Engineering student at the Higher Colleges of Technology said: “The Aero Modelling Workshop was very hands on and engaging. The instructors and attendees were passionate which made the workshop more interesting and fun. Working as part of a team, we all enjoyed learning how to build a radio controlled aero model from scratch. This was a great opportunity to meet and work with other DIYers in a fun and creative environment. We thank INNOVATOR program for this amazing workshop, and I will definitely participate in more workshops and use the INNOVATOR Zone to create my own project and hopefully win the competition”.

The INNOVATOR Summer Series will also provide the DIY Community in the UAE with different tools and equipment to make, create and tinker in the INNOVATOR Zone. The Zone is a space that provides DIYers with tools needed to make, build and craft their own unique creations. The INNOVATOR Zone will be available to all DIYers of intermediate to advanced skill level on the same days as the workshops from 10am – 6pm. Those interested do not have to participate in the workshops to use the amazing equipment available, such as a Vertical Bandsaw, Laser Cutter, 3D Printer and other equipment that can be used to build and tinker.

To further inspire budding inventors and makers, INNOVATOR will be holding two DIY project competitions offering all UAE based DIYers the chance to win of two 5,000 AED awards. Entrants must design a home-made project (either individually or as a group) that fits within INNOVATOR’s criteria and submit their entries between June 1-13 for the first competition, or August 10 – September 17 for the second.

Al Mail concluded: “Today demonstrated inspiration in action! Inventors of every age came together to fine tune their skills and ideas, and I’m sure the skies of Abu Dhabi will be packed with model aircrafts this summer. I encourage everyone to unleash their inner innovator through the INNOVATOR Summer Series interactive programmes and join us over the next five months for exciting and inspirational experiences; INNOVATOR truly is an exciting interactive community based event for all ages.”
