Panasonic Marketing Middle East & Africa (PMMAF) honoured the regional winners of the Panasonic Kids School ‘Eco Picture Diary’ and ‘Kid Witness News’ contests for young students, at a gala event in Dubai. 11 participating school children from UAE, Oman, Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan and Kenya were honoured at the event.

Developed by Panasonic for primary school children between the ages of 7 and 11, the Kids School Education programme gives students the opportunity to learn about environment and protecting the planet in an easy-to-understand and playful way.

One of the activities of the programme is to complete an ‘Eco Picture Diary’ in which children can write about and illustrate the activities they have done to contribute towards protecting the environment. With this diary, the children take part in a contest where the best illustrations are rewarded.

On the other hand, ‘Panasonic Kid Witness News’ is a hands-on video education program designed to help children develop creativity and cognitive and communication skills through the use of video. Panasonic provides video cameras and other equipment to participating schools for their video productions.

For the 2013-2014 leg of the competitions, Panasonic received 805 Eco Picture Diaries and 27 Kids Witness News Video entries from Middle East and Africa.

According to Shinichi Wakita, Managing Director, Panasonic Marketing Middle East & Africa: “Our Kids School Education programmes are aimed at supporting the development of the next generation in a belief that instilling good values in young minds will create a more sustainable society. I am amazed by the creativity and ingenuity of the entries we received this year from the children which show how committed they are to pursuing an eco-friendly lifestyle. We hope our programmes continue to create a heightened awareness of the environment and provide a platform for children to exchange their views and opinions.”

The videos and diaries were judged by an expert panel of judges from Panasonic.

One of the noteworthy winning entries for the Eco Picture Diary contest is from UAE school student Delela Sara Sabu from Indian Excellent Pvt School. The illustration within the diary focused on Delela’s daily activities towards protecting the environment from pollution, non-degradable waste and wastage of energy. The dairy won applauds for its strong message and creative conceptualization.

Other winners include Aravind K. Prasad from Indian School Al Wadi Al Kabir, Oman; Rawnaq Waseq from Jesus Nasiriyah Evangelical School, Lebanon; Jawad Dubayah from Rosary School, Jordan; and Winston Wachira from Wankan Academy, Kenya.
Winston Wachira was also chosen as the winner from the region and was felicitated at the global ceremony in Paris last year.

One of the winning entries for the Kids Witness News contest is from Somaya Bint Khayat for Basic and Secondary Education, UAE, and is titled ‘Be Kind to Our Land’. The winning video was creatively produced to emphasize the importance of reducing food wastage while protecting the environment and giving back to earth. The clearly defined ideas and well executed concept made it an impressive video. Other winners of the contest are student teams from Al Manar Modern School in Lebanon; and AL-Mutamyzeen High School in Iraq.

Anthony Peter, Director, Corporate Communications for Panasonic Marketing Middle East & Africa, said, “Our plan is to provide environmental education to two million children around the world by 2018. Last year we expanded our scope to include participants not only from GCC but also from across Africa. Year on year, we have witnessed exceptional level of creativity from the children and we strongly believe that through such initiatives, we are sowing the seeds for a greener tomorrow.”
