Saudi Basic Industries Corp (SABIC) and Japan’s Mitsubishi Rayon have received bids from four international engineering companies to build two petrochemicals plants in the kingdom, Saudi Gazette has reported, citing two industry sources. One of the proposed plants will produce up to 250,000 tonnes a year of methyl methacrylate monomer (MMA), while the other will produce up to 40,000 tonnes of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). The cost of the project is expected to be lower than SABIC’s first estimate of $1bn in 2009, the sources said.
