As part of the Sharjah Baby Friendly Campaign’s (SBFC) objective to create greater awareness on the importance of breastfeeding amongst the region’s growing community, the organisation will be supporting the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival by providing a caravan during the event, which is set to take place from the 15th to the 25th of April.

During those ten days, mothers will have access to breastfeeding and diaper changing stations under closed roofs for a private and peaceful atmosphere. The caravan can accommodate up to four ladies at a time, and will be available from 9 am to 9 pm for the duration of the festival. Whilst breastfeeding, mothers can watch a film called “From Pregnancy to Breastfeeding,” that was specifically created to teach them about the importance of this valuable practice.

Dr Hessa Khalfan Al Ghazal, Director of the Executive Committee of the Sharjah Baby Friendly Emirate Campaign, said: “We have received a tremendous amount of positive feedback from mothers and healthcare professionals regarding our breastfeeding training programme, and we are excited to extend this initiative to the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival. Since its Inception, the campaign has helped to equip healthcare givers with the tools needed to educate mothers on breastfeeding best practices, and this festival will prove to be another excellent way to put our theories into practise. The fact that this event is centred around youth and education falls right in alignment with our core values – which is for mothers to provide the essential nourishment for their children which will, in turn, play a pivotal role in the child’s development.”

The Sharjah Baby Friendly Emirate Campaign was launched in March 2012 under the directives of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, under the theme ‘A True Beginning for a Better Future’. Chaired by Sheikha Budoor bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), the Campaign focuses on supporting breastfeeding mothers and encouraging them to increase the proportion and duration of breastfeeding, so as to achieve its goal of promoting the physical and mental health of children and their parents.
