Sharjah Baby Friendly Emirate Campaign continues to implement infant feeding best practices

Continuing its drive to establish Sharjah as a baby friendly emirate, Sharjah Baby Friendly Campaign (SBFC), in collaboration with Maternal and Child Health Center – Sharjah, offered another Complementary Feeding Counselling Training Programme, Being held at the Training Hall of Maternal & Child Health Center in Sharjah from the 15th to the 16th of April, the programme aims to educate health workers who work with caregivers of young children from six to 24 months of age.

Upon completing the course, these professionals will be well-informed about the latest trends surrounding nutrition and suitable feeding techniques for children within this age group.

Speaking about the programme, Dr Hessa Khalfan Al Ghazal, Director of the Executive Committee for the Sharjah Baby Friendly Emirate Campaign said, “Effective feeding practices are vital for the survival, growth, development, health and nutrition of infants and children everywhere. Our goal is to implement a global strategy that will empower healthcare professionals in the UAE, providing them with the proper tools and education on optimal feeding, growth, psycho-social development, and well-being of infants and young children. These courses provide the necessities on feeding young children which comes from family beliefs, community practices and information from the health workers themselves, which is why this course is essential.”

The two-day training programme, which has been developed by the World Health Organization and carries CME accreditation by the Ministry of Health in the UAE covered a range of vital topics including appropriate and effective complementary feeding practices and sustainability of activities in health facilities. Participants were taken on field trips to learn about practice gathering on the feeding of young children, the food Intake tool to find out what an individual child eats to gain insight on local feeding practices, and were taught counseling skills to offer imperative information to a caregiver.

The programme included Lecturers and Facilitators, health care personnel, representatives from Sharjah, dieticians, lactation consultants, specialists, and pediatricians, working with mothers and children directly trained and certified by formal scientist at the Department of Nutrition for Health and Development at the World Health Organization (WHO) under the supervision of Sharjah Baby Friendly Campaign.

The Sharjah Baby Friendly Emirate Campaign was launched in March 2012 under the directives of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, under the theme ‘A True Beginning for a Better Future’. Chaired by Sheikha Budoor bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), the Campaign focuses on supporting breastfeeding mothers and encouraging them to increase the proportion and duration of breastfeeding, so as to achieve its goal of promoting the physical and mental health of children and their parents.
