Sharjah Museums Department marks Earth Hour

March 29, 2014 1:49 pm

As part of Sharjah Museums Department’s commitment to the environment, Sharjah Aquarium and Sharjah Maritime Museum is participating in a worldwide campaign to observe Earth Hour- an event that sees billions of people around the world switch off their lights for an hour every March, to raise awareness of global warming and preservation of the environment in a symbolic gesture.

SMD will turn off their lights for an hour at 8.30pm on Saturday 29th March, as part of its Social Responsibility Initiative titled ‘Because we Care’.

Going beyond the ‘light’s out’ programme, SMD organised a fun-packed program which will start at 4.30pm.

Families will also have their share in this event, where at 4:30 pm, there will be unique workshops, creating their own phosphoric, glow-in-the-dark accessories in preparation for the special hour.

Various competitions will be held in the outer courtyard of the Sharjah Aquarium and Sharjah Maritime Museum, to engage and involve children and families; where then will be honoured at a special prize giving ceremony.

“SMD is proud to be taking part in Earth Hour for the fifth year in a row,” Director General of SMD, Manal Ataya said. “Being part of this major global initiative is a vital aspect of our SRI, and indicates our dedication to raising awareness of climate change, the importance of conserving electricity and reducing carbon emissions for the overall benefit of the planet.”

During the event, SMD will be switching off interior and exterior lights, unplugging all the electrical appliances possible and using alternative means of energy for conservation purposes.

Participants in the event will include Sharjah Municipality, the Ministry of Environment and Water, Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA) and Sharjah Mega Mall.
