H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Salem Al Qassimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, opened the 16th National Career Exhibition at Expo Centre Sharjah on Wednesday (Feb 19).

The three-day fair which concludes on Feb 21 is held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, UAE Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, offering career opportunities to national graduates in some of the country’s nearly 1,900 financial sector establishments, and other public and private sector organisations.

The opening was attended by Mr. Ahmed Mohammed Al Midfa, Chairman, Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Mr. Saif Mohammed Al Midfa, CEO, Expo Centre Sharjah; and senior government, SCCI and Expo Centre officials.

“More than just an employment opportunity, the National Career Exhibition has been guiding national graduates towards a rewarding career, and in the process contributing to the nation’s economic and social development,” said Mr. Ahmed Mohammed Al Midfa.

He also laid stress on the role the show is playing in boosting Emiratisation, which has recently been given a greater thrust by the government. According to the UAE National Agenda, Emiratisation in the UAE’s private sector is set to increase tenfold over the next seven years.

“The push for on Emiratisation in the UAE National Agenda comes close on the ‘Year of Emiratisation’ initiative held last year and shows our leaders’ emphasise in building a national human capital pool,” added Mr. Ahmed Mohammed Al Midfa.

Explaining the focus of the exhibition, Mr. Saif Mohammed Al Midfa said that though the National Career Exhibition is showcasing jobs and training opportunities in almost all sectors, the focus is on the country’s flourishing financial sector, besides other prominent public and private sector establishments.

This is also in line with expectations of the youth, who, according to a recent survey by an online portal, see roles within accounting/banking/finance as one of the fastest growing in the country, particularly in the wake of the winning bid to host the World Expo 2020. Conservative estimates put the number of jobs likely to be generated by the expo alone to be at around 270,000.

“Banks have made Emiratisation central to their growth strategy and have drawn up plans to train young Emiratis since there are not enough experienced and trained national hands to meet the current needs of the banking and finance industry. With the government setting new Emiratisation targets, the National Career Exhibition becomes a boon for banks to spot the right talent, train and retain them,” added Mr. Saif Mohammed Al Midfa.

According to a survey published in a Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies and Research magazine, the UAE generates more than 150,000 new jobs every year, and about 13 per cent of the country’s national workforce or about 30,000 Emiratis are joining the employment market annually.

More than 100 establishments from the banking & financial industry, insurance, money exchanges, free zones, financial consultants, telecoms, oil & gas, and government bodies are participating in the show, showcasing jobs and training opportunities.

The UAE Armed Forces is the Platinum Sponsor of the exhibition and has one of the biggest stalls at the show, while leading lenders such as Sharjah Islamic Bank, Commercial Bank of Dubai, National Bank of Abu Dhabi and Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank are the Gold Sponsors, and telecom major du is the strategic sponsor.

The exhibition is open from 19th to 21st February at Expo Centre Sharjah. The timings are from 10am to 8pm on 19th & 20th February and 4pm to 8pm only on Friday, 21st February. Admission is strictly restricted to UAE Nationals only.
