UAEBBY discusses cooperation with Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan Cultural Center

Sheikha Shamma bint Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan, Chairperson of the Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan Cultural Center, has commended the role played by the UAE Board on Books for Young People (UAEBBY) in promoting the culture of reading among children and young adults in the UAE and launching initiatives that bring children and books together.

The statement was made during a visit paid by a delegation from the UAEBBY to Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan Cultural Center in Al Ain City. The delegation was comprised of Marwa Obaid Al Aqroubi, President of the UAEBBY Executive Board, accompanied by UAEBBY Board Member Shaikha Almehairi.

Sheikha Dr. Shamma bint Mohammed Al Nahyan listened to a briefing from Marwa Al Aqroubi about the UAEBBY and its role in assisting authors and illustrators to produce high quality books by developing their capabilities and improving coordination and cooperation amongst them. Sheikha Shamma was also briefed on the ground breaking ‘Read, Dream, Create’ initiative launched by the UAEBBY recently to support the capabilities of children and young adults to read, write, innovate, and create children’s books.

Sheikha Dr. Shamma expressed her appreciation for the UAEBBY’s outstanding efforts in inspiring children and young adults to read and strengthening communication amongst various relevant parties in the field of children’s literature. She praised the UAEBBY’s launch of a series of valuable initiatives, most notably the prestigious Etisalat Award for Arabic Children’s Literature.

Marwa Al Aqroubi affirmed that the UAEBBY is eager to cement cooperation with local cultural foundations to achieve its objectives of promoting a reading culture among children and young people and thereby enrich the children of the UAE’s culture and knowledge so that they might be capable of meeting the challenges of contemporary life and effectively contribute to building future. Opportunities of joint cooperation in organising reading sessions, training courses and workshops were discussed to help promote reading amongst children in the UAE.

The UAE Board on Books for Young People (UAEBBY) is the national section in the United Arab Emirates of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY). Founded in Switzerland in 1953, the IBBY is an international network of people from more than 77 countries who are committed to bringing books and children together.
