Following the UAE government’s directive on environmental protection, Gulf Craft, one of the world’s top 10 superyacht building shipyards, recently held a beach clean-up in Umm Al Quwain in cooperation with the UAQ Public Works Service Department.

More than 50 employees of Gulf Craft helped clean three coastline areas stretching for five kilometres in Umm Al Quwain.

The team collected two truckloads of rubbish in the one-day event as part of the company’s advocacy of promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility.

“Over the years, we have been supporting and sponsoring various government initiatives on environmental protection and this is the first time we held our solo project to show our advocacy for a better and cleaner environment,” said Erwin Bamps, Gulf Craft’s Chief Operating Officer. “The protection of the environment is an important component of our company’s social responsibility. We always incorporate the concept of ‘Thinking Green’ in our boat-building,” added Bamps. “We do not only build boats and superyachts for luxury and pleasure, we also want to keep our environment clean and preserve our natural resources for future generations to enjoy,” he further added.

Bamps said Umm Al Quwain is remarkable for its abundance and diversity of marine life. “The emirate is home to the UAE’s largest Socotra Cormorant bird colony, numbering close to 15,000 – making it the third largest colony in the world. It is important to keep their habitat clean,” he added. Bamps also noted, “The importance of keeping our coastline unpolluted. We source our potable water by desalinating sea water. Therefore, it is very important that we keep our seas and oceans clean and beautiful.”

“The clean-up campaign was amazing and the volunteers were in high spirits,” said Sultan Ghanam Ahmad Almoghani from the UAQ Public Works & Service Department. “It was inspiring to see their commitment to help keep our environment clean. We would like to thank Gulf Craft for their continued support,” he added.

Gulf Craft’s HR Manager Mohd. Abdul Monem added, “Our volunteers and staff had fun while making a difference for the environment.”

Aside from the beach clean-up, Gulf Craft is also closely working with Bee’ah, the region’s leading fully integrated environment and waste management company, in the recycling of papers, cardboards and other waste materials.

“We have planted greenery in our facilities and use filtration systems to minimize pollution. And for our employees, we have built them a facility for entertainment and physical development,” added Mohd. Abdul Monem.
