Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in the Western Region (Al Gharbia); The Cultural Programs and Heritage Festivals Committee – Abu Dhabi is currently intensifying its preparations for the launch of the 6th edition of Al Gharbia Watersports Festival.
Organised in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Sailing & Yacht Club, the Festival will be held from the 24th April to May 3/2014 in the city of Mirfa in Al Gharbia (The Western Region); in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council.
HE Mohammed Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Adviser for Culture and Heritage in the Court of the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Cultural Programs and Heritage Festivals Committee – Abu Dhabi said, “In a press statement, “The Festival seeks to achieve a set of goals and objectives, including the promotion of Al Gharbia as an ideal destination for visitors and tourists interested in marine and beach sports.” “The Watersports Festival also hopes to highlight the many attractions in Al Gharbia, and increases the number of tourist activities with the aim of raising the occupancy rate of hotels, and promoting local products,” he added.
Al Mazrouei noted, “These objectives conform and converge with the vision and goals of the Committee in supporting cultural, heritage, social and tourist activities, and encouraging the local community to practice these activities that are associated with customs and traditions.” “We hope to help the locals promote the various products that are made and manufactured by families in the region. The Festival does actually provide an appropriate platform for locals to display and sell their products in the Traditional Market, which is held as part of the activities of the Festival on Mirfa Beach. Among the other objectives that we aim to achieve is the support of a more dynamic lifestyle for the younger generations in Al Gharbia and the promotion of an active participation in the diverse sports and marine games,” he added.
Al Mazrouei revealed that the Festival features several and diverse activities, notably kite surfing, stand-up paddle boarding, Al Bwanich sailing race, Tfares Dhow Race on Marwah Island, modern sailing boat race, traditional rowing boat race, kayak race, swimming, games for kids, beach football and volleyball, traditional market, shows, theatre competitions, parasailing, and cooking contest.
“These activities promote the message of the Festival, which was set by the Committee to serve culture, society and sports. We are not seeking to organise a festival for the sole sake of its organisation. In fact, the Committee is keen on achieving the goal of its mission, which consists in transforming the Watersports Festival into a significant ring in a series of events that contribute to the endorsement of Al Gharbia’s status as a leading destination for tourism and sports. The Festival, hence, stands as an important platform for the promotion of the region’s unique attractions. It is also a special opportunity for locals to have a good time,” said Al Mazrouei.
“Through the organisation of this Festival, the Cultural Programs and Heritage Festivals Committee – Abu Dhabi adds a new sweet-scented rose to the bouquet of its activities and events, notably those organised in Al Gharbia. It should be noted, in this context, that the region hosts a number of other assorted festivals, namely Al Dhafra Festival, the Baynounah Camel Festival, and the Liwa Date Festival. We stand ready to add new events and activities to our calendar if required,” he added.
