World’s most innovative countries: Where does the UAE stand?

The United Arab Emirates ranked first in the Arab world and 41st globally on the Global Innovation Index (GII) for 2016, which this year holds the theme of “Winning with Global Innovation.”

The Gulf country’s ranking has improved since last year, when it ranked second in the Arab world and 47th internationally.

The report is co-published by Cornell University, INSEAD and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), an agency of the United Nations. It ranks the innovative capabilities and results of 128 economies around the world and has now been released in its ninth edition.

GII measures innovation based on five fundamental pillars covering institutions, human capital and research, infrastructure, market sophistication and business sophistication, in addition to the output results of a country’s knowledge, technological advancement and creativity.

Below are the top ten most innovative economies, based on the index.
