Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi announced as an Emirates Wildlife Society ‘Verified Corporate Hero’ 2014
Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi has been recognised as a ‘Verified Corporate Hero’ by Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF) after successfully fulfilling the three pledges required by the programme at an award ceremony hosted at Yas Viceroy. The award is in line with hotel’s commitment to the WWF (EWS- WWF) ‘Heroes of the UAE’ program, designed to encourage all sectors of society across the UAE to reduce their carbon footprint.
Commenting on the award, Andrew Humphries, General Manager of Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi, said, “It is a great honour to receive this award, being one of only two businesses to win in the entire UAE. This is a very important recognition of our efforts toward building a culture of corporate social responsibility in the hotel. I am very proud to be part of this hotel’s achievement and look forward to continuing our green journey. We have played an active role in reducing the UAE’s ecological footprint and helping to tackle climate change, and we hope our example will inspire more organisations across the country. A special thank you to our engineers, Ayman Alhalalat and Anand Mungre, who helped us get this far.”
As a part of Yas Viceroy’s environmental strategy, the team developed a prolonged technical approach to tackle energy and water conservation, combined with behavioural awareness. Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi was able to achieve 11.9% savings in electricity and 13.9% in water, thus decreasing CO2 emissions by 2,479 tons of CO2 per year, despite a 14% increase in hotel occupancy.
Educating employees about the need for energy conservation, and promoting behavioural modifications of staff, coupled with energy saving measures within facilities, can all systematically make a big difference regarding the hotel facilities becoming more energy efficient with reduction in costs.
Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi also attributes planning ahead as an important part of implementing energy and water saving initiatives in the hotel. To achieve more results the hotel will be adopting a total energy saving plan, which emphasises on continued reduction of energy costs. The key is that high efficiency systems are understood, integrated and optimised for savings.
