Umniah, WritersCell successfully conclude creative writing workshop

April 23, 2014 1:34 pm

In an attempt to encourage local creativity, Umniah has partnered with Middle Eastern creative writing incubator, WritersCell, and sponsored aspiring writers in a week-long workshop held in Amman.

The sponsorship package included refreshments along with ample stationery to complete assignments. WritersCell’s first cycle was facilitated by Zaina Arafat, an adjunct professor of creative writing at the University of Iowa and whose trip to Amman was fully paid for by Umniah.

WritersCell was founded by spoken word artist and writer Aysha El-Shamayleh, with support from Project Pen, a local initiative dedicated to encouraging aspiring writers across the Middle East. Centering on creative non-fiction writing, the intensive course took place at Umniah’s training center in Shmeisani, where eleven select writers discussed writing styles and later composed individual pieces.

The workshop is the first of its kind and due to its success; WritersCell aims to organize a second one in the upcoming months.

The Corporate and Marketing Communications Manager at Umniah, Rania Abu Khader, commented on the recent writing workshop saying, “The course has greatly inspired our local writers to continue pursuing their dreams. Hence, Umniah is pleased to support such a unique workshop as it will encourage more to join in and express their thoughts and develop their skills.”
