Abu Dhabi International Airport has shut down its south runway for construction work, as part of its Capacity Enhancement Programme, The National has reported. The project will include widening the runway to accommodate for the A380 and other jumbo jets. The airport will now begin operating on the north runway, which was opened in 2009 to double the airport’s aircraft handling capacity, in line with plans to accommodate the expected increase in traffic once the Midfield Terminal building opens in 2017.
