Akbar al-Baker, the CEO of Qatar Airways has said he wants the Korean government to ease regulations as the airline looks to expand services with its newly opened Hamad International Airport to compete with UAE’s Etihad Airways and Emirates Airline, Korea Joongang Daily has reported. “We want to expand to Korea,” al-Baker told the daily. “But Korean authorities are protectionists, so every time we apply for additional facilities and flights, we’re not given them.” Currently, Qatar Airways has a daily flight to Korea, just as its UAE-based rivals, Etihad Airways and Emirates.
