Saudi hospitality design drive by family, business and religious tourism

April 19, 2014 3:10 pm

The importance of the family will dominate the architectural and design trends adopted by the hospitality industry in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia over the coming years. This can be seen further by the impact of areas such as Makkah and Riyadh, where huge development is being seen in this sector.

“The Saudi market caters to its own needs, with the only real impact from external audiences coming through business and religious tourism,” commented Mustapha Chbinou, regional director Middle East and North Africa, for hotel interior design specialists, Getty’s. “The Saudi hotel market has traditionally been dominated by furnished apartments, whereas we are now seeing a move towards a more traditional hotel layout. This evolution must take into account core cultural traditions, namely that businessmen often travel with their families; families which can quite large in size. To accommodate this, hotel rooms need to be a little bigger, with suites being popular,” he added.

The Hotel Show Saudi Arabia, taking place later this month in Jeddah, will see a variety of interior design companies, like Getty’s, showcasing their own solutions for the Saudi hospitality market. The business and family focus of this sector in the Kingdom brings about a need for efficient space solutions, which can support the 10 million-strong influx of religious tourists to Mekkah, as well as the strong business communities of Riyadh.

Christine Davidson, event director, The Hotel Show Saudi Arabia, said: “This year we have seen a lot more interior companies taking part in the event, as the influx of opportunities, together with the increase in international hotel chains looking to invest in the market brings the need for hospitality interior design to evolve.

Products and solutions to drive this forward will be a core part of the event this month, and we anticipate that topics including room layout, and the most effective ways of creating a space that accommodates both family, privacy and comfort will be at the forefront of conversations on the show floor.

The Hotel Show Saudi Arabia, taking place from 22-24 April at Jeddah Center for Forums and Events, is supported by the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, held under the patronage of Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities and MICE. Knowledge Partners include Euromonitor International, Ventures Middle East and TOP Hotel Projects.
