Expo2020’s sustainability subtheme driving initiatives
Expo2020 was announced with a theme in mind: “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future” and three sub-themes: “Sustainability, Mobility, and Opportunity”.
Today, we look into “sustainability.”
According to reports, UAE fashion designers will be given the opportunity to create uniforms for more than 30,000 Expo 2020 Dubai volunteers and staff.
Worn every day of the six-month event, the men’s and women’s uniforms will reflect Expo’s theme, ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’, while celebrating the UAE’s rich heritage. Competition designs must incorporate elements of UAE culture, and be practical, weather appropriate, easily identifiable but modest.
In alignment with one of Expo 2020’s three subthemes (sustainability), three finalists, selected by 30 September, 2018, will receive AED 50,000 ($13,614) and be asked to create samples of the full line, including top, bottom, outer jacket, hat, bag, tie, scarf, kandora and ghitra, abaya and shayla, and an Expo 2020 accessory.
The designs should use recycled or organic fabrics, zero waste concepts, or which take into account sustainable practices and innovations throughout the supply chain will be weighed more favorably.
However, from fashion to construction, Cologne-based agency, Facts and Fiction, and Swiss construction company, Adunic, have formed the consortium that will provide design and build services for the project, with architecture designs to be delivered by Berlin-based Lava all in line with the subtheme ‘Sustainability’, according to reports.
Building work on the German Pavilion’s 4,500m2 plot at Expo 2020Dubai’s site will begin next year, a senior official revealed.
Facts and Fiction will deliver content, exhibition, and media design for the development, which Adunic will build.
In a press statement, Koelnmesse revealed that Facts and Fiction “specialize in spatial communication”, while Adunic is known for the construction of temporary buildings.
Koelnmesse added: “The main requirement was to take Expo 2020 Dubai’s theme of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’ and the sustainability subtheme chosen by Germany, and translate them into a pavilion concept that will grasp visitors’ interest and hold it from start to finish while also creating a seamless marriage between the pavilion’s architecture and its content.”
The concept will be revealed during a press conference at Koelnmesse in Cologne on 4 September 2018, and at the Steigenberger Hotel Business Bay in Dubai on 19 September.
